Paul Krugman's latest article for the Times:

"It's now two months since Baghdad fell — and according to The A.P., military units searching for W.M.D.'s have run out of places to look.

Colin Powell has declared that questions about the justification for war are "outrageous."

"I'll tell you what's outrageous. It's not the fact that people are criticizing the administration; it's the fact that nobody is being held accountable for misleading the nation into war."

Buzzflash offers a few suggestions to start a movement that will hopefully see the impeachment of George W. Bush and the abolishment of the so-called "Bush Doctrine"

Bush Administration seeks to weaken The Clean Water Act

More than half the nation's waters -- ranging from neighborhood creeks and fishing holes, at least 60 percent of our nation's streams and 20 percent of our wetlands to entire drinking water supplies -- could lose federal protection under the Bush administration proposal. Polluters could then dump wastes into these waterways without a permit, without notifying the public, and without fear of reprisals. Big oil is also getting into the act. for more

Check out Benedict's post on the missing WMD.

I agree Benedict, it IS hard to feel motivated to write anything on the inability to find weapons of Mass destruction in Iraq because for many of us the claim was bullshit when we watched it form and drop and it's the same bullshit now as we watch it get stuck in the drain. Of course the Bushites might well get their WMD planted and they won't even bother making it perfect because it only has to be good enough for FOX! The media whores will do the rest.

QUID PRO QUO
"Once in a while the curtains part in Washington and you find out what goes on behind them."
The Westar documents offer a rare view into a company's efforts to influence Congress.
Congressman Barton was one of the lawmakers assigned to the House-Senate conference committee that finalized President Bush (news - web sites)'s energy plan in 2002. The exemption he introduced would have freed Westar from unwanted regulatory oversight,
allowing then to transfer billions of dept from their other business's to customers through rate hikes.

FOXES GUARDING THE HEN HOUSE?
Strange local news - Sonoma County Animal Shelter Workers butcher and barbeque pet emu. Woman waiting to adopt the animal horrified. Director looks into past records and finds several instances where animals ended up on someone's plate. All shelter worker's adoptions must now get director's approval. I always figured that shelter workers loved animals... guess they do.

Murdoch media mogul may have to pass a public interest test in Britain

Lord Puttnam has led stiff resistance to a clause in the Communications Bill that would allow Murdoch to acquire a terrestrial broadcaster.
But watch out Mr. Puttnam -Ruperts gonna getcha.

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT.

If we Democrats want to recruit Greens and other forward thinkers to our cause, it is time to clean our own house first by eliminating every DLC presidential candidate in the primaries of 2004.

Water in the desert. Who’ll own it -who’ll get it - privatization of the worlds most valuable resource

Should Iraq's water system remain in public hands as a state-run utility? Or should private companies -- Iraqi or foreign -- run it?

MAKING DISSENT A CRIMINAL ACT

Congress votes on an amendment today that would for the first time write into the Constitution an exception to the First Amendment's guarantee that Congress "make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech..."

"This exceedingly disturbingly amendment that would make all Americans less free," said People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas. "Members of Congress should honor the flag by protecting the freedom it represents.
after all, the freedom to dissent and disagree is one of the things that makes America great."

Benedict at large posted something about our Martha. Seems she has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democrats...hmmm was that her really big mistake?

The Bitter Shack has a good post about the 3.5 million dollar price tag on the cost of the war protests in SFO. I personally think that it should be included as the cost of the war since that’s what it was.

“what you do in my name you do unto me” that’s what I was taught.

News on The Congo

The Ugandans had warned the U.N. that their departure would create a power vacuum with the possibility of destabilization and violence.

TORT REFORM LIMITS LAWSUITS

Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, accuses the Bush administration of trying to overturn a longstanding judicial precedent important in the protection of human rights.

"This is a craven attempt to protect human rights abusers at the expense of victims,"

Burmese citizens say their human rights were violated during the construction of a $1.2 billion gas pipeline. The pipeline was a joint venture of the Burmese military regime, Unocal -- a multinational oil and gas company based in El Segundo, Calif. -- and two other private firms.

Another lawsuit under the alien tort act is against ExxonMobil Corp. in connection with operations in Indonesia.
And in the 1980s, the Reagan administration filed a brief opposing use of the statute in a lawsuit against Marcos.

Curtis Bradley, says "There's a real danger that these lawsuits, if they continue to expand as they have, could truly interfere with relations that we have with foreign governments."

Hello! What does that tell you about the relationships we have and who we choose to have them with?!

One of the most successful lawsuits was the claim against Marcos, filed by nearly 10,000 Filipinos who won a $1.9 billion judgment against his estate in federal court in Hawaii in 1995. The plaintiffs settled with the Marcos estate and the Philippine government for $160 million, but payment has so far been blocked by a judge in the Philippines.

LOCKED UP IN THE LAND OF THE FREE

With a record-setting 2 million people locked up in American jails and prisons, the United States has overtaken Russia and has a higher percentage of its citizens behind bars than any other country.

‘On a per capita basis, according to the best available figures, the United States has three times more prisoners than Iran, four times more than Poland, five times more than Tanzania and seven times more than Germany. Maryland has more citizens in prison and jail (an estimated 35,200) than all of Canada (31,600), though Canada's population is six times greater.

Well, now remember, depending on how Congress votes today, they’ll be yet another way to get locked up- if you do protest, don’t even think about desecrating the flag.
